UNON remembers victims of disasters in China and Myanmar

NAIROBI, 28 May 2008, a Prayer and Remembrance Service was held by the United Nations Offices in Nairobi (UNON) at the Peace Garden in the UN compound to commemorate the victims of the Sichuan earthquake in China and cyclone in Myanmar.

UN-Habitat Deputy Executive Director Ms. Inga Bjork-Klevby and UNEP Deputy Executive Director Ms. Beverly Miller expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the Victims and assured UN's firm support for rebuilding the disaster-affected area.

Mr. Xue Bing, Charge D'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Kenya attended the Service. He thanked UNON for organizing the service and condolences shown by the guests. Mr. Xue expressed confidence in his remarks that the Chinese people would overcome the current difficulties and rebuild the homeland for the quake victims.

A siren and minute of silence, lighting of the candles, a poem recited by the MCEDO-Beijing School in Mathare, and the laying of wreaths were performed at the Service.
