Remarks on the Kenyan Situation by the Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China

On 29 February, Mr. Liu Jianchao, the Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, made the following remarks on the latest development of the Kenyan situation:

On 28 February, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga signed the Agreement on the Principle of Partnership of the Coalition Government. The Chinese side hereby expresses its welcome and congratulations. The Chinese side appreciates that both sides, proceeding from the interests of the country and its people, resolved their disputes on the general election through political dialogue and consultation. We hope the concerned parties will cherish this hardwon achievement and continue to resolve other related issues through dialogue so as to maintain national peace and stability. The Chinese side appreciates and supports the important role played by the former UN Secretary General Dr. Kofi Annan and the African Union for facilitating the political settlement of the crisis in Kenya. China attaches great importance to the friendly cooperation with Kenya, which is a traditional friend of China, and supports its efforts to achieve political reconciliation, economic and social development. China is ready to work together with the Kenyan side to promote further China-Kenya bilateral relations.
