Remarks by H.E. Dr. Liu Xianfa at the Launching Ceremony Held by President Kenyatta for Awarding Chinese Scholarships to Kenyan Students

Your Excellency President of Republic of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta,

Honorable Cabinet Secretary of Education, Amina Mohammed,

Honorable Cabinet Secretary of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mwangi Kinunjuri,

Honorable Head of Public Service, Joseph Kinyua,

Vice Chancellor of Egerton University, Prof. Rose Mwonya,

Directors of the Confucius Institute at Egerton University,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good morning!

It’s a great honor for me to attend this very important and special event. First of all, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations for the launching of this scholarships program, as another very important achievement of the cooperation between the government of People’s Republic of China and the government of Republic of Kenya. From 2012, the Confucius Institute at Egerton University is mutually supported by Egerton University and Nanjing Agricultural University. Over the years, the two universities have been working together on promoting the China-Kenya agricultural and higher education exchanges and made great achievements, including the establishment of crop molecular biology laboratory at Egerton University, which is one of the 20 agreements reached in 2014 when Premier Li Keqiang visited Kenya. With most advanced equipment worth 70 million Kenya shillings, it currently serves as a center for agricultural technology transfer in Kenya.

Your Excellency,

Cabinet Secretaries ,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Ensuring food and nutrition security is a fundamental agenda in the Big Four Plan initiated by H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta. In this course, technological advancement and professional knowledge play crucial roles. As Kenya’s good brother, good partner and good friend, China has been in full cooperation with Kenya in pursuing her objectives. Today’s program will offer 100 doctoral and master scholarships from 2018 to 2022. We sincerely hope that this program could make strong contribution to the implementation of His Excellency’s Big Four Plan. With this program, Kenyan students will have more opportunities to study doctoral and master courses at top Chinese universities, including Nanjing Agricultural University. The courses will focus on specialties including irrigation, food security, horticultural science, agricultural engineering, value-chain management, storage, quality and safety. Chinese Embassy will make every effort for the full success of this program. I believe when these students come back to Kenya, they will be equipped with professional knowledge to accelerate Kenya’s agricultural modernization and food security, and make their important contributions to push forward China-Kenya Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, as an example of China-Africa friendship and cooperation, to a new height, thus benefiting the two peoples tremendously.

Thank you!
