Remarks by H.E.Dr. Liu Xianfa at the Ceremony of Awarding Chinese Ambassador Scholarship

(December 1, 2017)

Respected Prof. Mbithi, Prof. Mutoro and Prof. Muriuki,

Dear students,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good afternoon. It gives me great pleasure to be with you today. First of all, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the winners of this year’s Chinese Ambassador Scholarship. You must be and you should be very proud of yourselves.

The University of Nairobi, as the leading institution of higher education in Kenya and Eastern Africa, has made notable progress in academic innovation and international cooperation in recent years. In particular, we have seen the fruitful outcomes of the close cooperation between the university and its Chinese partners. To name just a few, this main building was built by China Wuyi and has now become a new landmark, and the Confucius Institute of this university, the first one in Africa, was awarded the title of Global Model Confucius Institute for its outstanding works on language teaching and cultural exchanges.

Education is the key to development, and it is fundamental to China’s pursuit of national rejuvenation. Educational modernization was addressed in the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China last month. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you the major outcomes of this historic meeting.

The CPC congress launched the new task of developing China into a modernized socialist country by the middle of this century and laid out a comprehensive plan to promote the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics, marking a new era for China’s economic and social development. It established the historical position of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a new era. The Xi Jinping Thought sets forth the fundamental polices for upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, serving as guiding thought to unite and lead the CPC and Chinese people to achieve our new goals.

Aiming to foster a new type of international relations of win-win cooperation and common development and build a community with a shared future for mankind, the congress is important not only for China’s future but also for that of the whole world, because the new era of China offers new opportunities and solutions to the rest of the world, and the governance and development experience of China offers a new option for other developing countries who want to speed up their own economic and social progress while preserving their independence.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

China and Kenya are good friends, good brothers and good partners. Over the years, the bilateral cooperation between China and Kenya has been significantly deepened in all fields. As China’s development is ushered into a new era, our bilateral cooperation is facing new opportunities which will not only facilitate Kenya to maintain its position as Eastern African hub of transport, trade, finance, tourism and manufacture but also strongly support Kenya's pursuit of realizing industrialization and agricultural modernization.

A few days ago, President Kenyatta was sworn in for the second term. We are impressed by His Excellency’s visionary plan for his new term and believe that Kenya will make greater progress in its national development and modernization.

As our two peoples are rolling up their sleeves to strive for a brighter future, our young generation should work even harder and more closely to push the China-Kenya Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership to a new high.

As Chinese President Xi Jinping said, “A nation will prosper only when its young people thrive. A country will be full of hope and have a great tomorrow only when its younger generation has ideals, ability and a strong sense of responsibility.” Every time when I visit Kenyan schools and universities, I am impressed by these young Kenyans working so hard for a better future. Academic study and research require not just painstaking efforts but also clear targets. As Kenya’s Vision 2030 has drawn a blueprint for industrialization and modernization, engineering and technology need to be given priority in education. In this regard, Chinese Embassy will continue to offer strong support to the educational institutions in Kenya and help young Kenyans pursue their dreams.

In closing, I would like to congratulate our talented students again and wish all of you success in all fields of study. Thank you!
