Chinese Embassy in Kenya held the Pre-Departure Gathering for the Kenyan Awardees of the Chinese Government Scholarship

On August 25, 2015, the Chinese Embassy in Kenya held the Pre-Departure Gathering for the 67 Kenyan students and government officials who have won the 2015/2016 Chinese Government Scholarship. H.E. Mr. Liu Xianfa, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Dr. Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Education, officials from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, scholarship awardees, journalists from China and Kenya, and diplomats from the Chinese Embassy were present.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Liu extended his warm congratulations to the scholarship awardees and his sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya for the support and assistance in the course of implementation of the Chinese Government Scholarship. Ambassador Liu introduced briefly China to the participants, spoke highly of the friendly cooperative relations between China and Kenya, and emphasized that education is one of the most important areas of China-Kenya cooperation. Ambassador Liu said the Chinese government has continuously provided scholarships and training opportunities to Kenya over the past years, and established 4 Confucius Institutes and 1 Classrooms in Kenya. Ambassador Liu encouraged the scholarship awardees to seize the opportunity and study hard, learn Chinese language and culture, promote the friendship between the two countries, and come back home to serve Kenya after successful completion of study in China.

Dr. Kipsang thanked China for providing scholarships and training opportunities for Kenya, which made significant contribution to the social and economic development of Kenya. He also urged the awardees to cherish the opportunity and behave as Kenyan young ambassadors to China, so as to actively contribute to the enhancement of Kenya and China friendly relations. He announced that the Kenyan government would appoint and dispatch an Education Attaché to the Kenyan Embassy in China by the end of this year.

Ms. Mumo Lucia, on behalf of the scholarship awardees, expressed deep gratitude to the Chinese government for granting the scholarships and promised that she will study hard and contribute to national construction of Kenya and Kenya-China friendship.

The reception was in a warm, friendly and festive atmosphere. The scholarship awardees took group photo with Ambassador Liu and Dr. Kipsang, and actively asked the Kenyan officials and Chinese diplomats for tips in living and studying in China.
